Philip Crozier

Born in Preston, England, Philip Crozier began learning the piano at six, and was a treble chorister in both Blackburn and Carlisle Cathedral choirs, singing daily choral services. His interest in the organ started very early and he began organ study at the age of sixteen, gaining the ARCO diploma whilst still at school, followed by the LRAM diploma in organ performance within two years. In 1979 he graduated from Cardiff University where he was awarded the Glynne Jones Prize for Organ in 1978 and 1979 and pursued further studies in Paris with the great blind French organist André Marchal in whose memory he performed the complete organ works of César Franck in 1981.

In 1984 he moved to Canada and married the late Sylvie Poirier, an organist and painter, with whom he formed an organ duo team in 1990, becoming known internationally through their concert career and commissioning of organ duets by composers from Canada and abroad and the release of recordings which include three CDs of solo organ works by Petr Eben.

Philip Crozier has given solo recitals extensively in Europe and North America, including the complete organ works of Jehan Alain in Montreal in 1990 (and again in 2011 in thirteen concerts in Europe) and the Canadian première of Petr Eben’s Hommage à Henry Purcell in 1995 at the request of the composer.

Philip Crozier is the organist at St. George’s Anglican Church, Montreal and Music Director at Westmount Park United Church. He is the accompanist to the Stewart Hall Singers, the Concordia University Chorus, l’Ensemble Opus 16 and is in regular demand as accompanist to various choral and instrumental groups as well as maintaining an international career as a solo recitalist.

Natif de la ville de Preston en Angleterre, Philip Crozier commence l’étude du piano dès l’âge de six ans et joint quelques années plus tard les maîtrises des cathédrales de Blackburn et de Carlisle où il est initié à la tradition quotidienne de l’hymne protestant anglosaxon. Il s’intéresse très vite à l’orgue et à seize ans, il entreprend des cours sur cet instrument, obtenant son diplôme d’Associateship of the Royal College of Organists (ARCO) pendant qu’il est encore à l’école, et puis en moins de deux ans, celui de Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music (LRAM). En 1979, il obtient le titre de Bachelor of Music à l’Université Cardiff et, à deux reprises en 1978 et 1979, le prix Glynne Jones for Organ. Il poursuit ses études par la suite à Paris avec le fameux organiste aveugle André Marchal à la mémoire de qui il a exécuté en 1981 l’oeuvre intégrale d’orgue de César Franck.

En 1984, il a immigré au Canada et a épousé feu Sylvie Poirier, une organiste et peintre, avec qui il a formé en 1990 un duo reconnu internationalement entre autres pour la création et l’enregistrement discographique d’oeuvres originales commandées à des compositeurs aussi bien canadiens qu’étrangers, y compris des enregistrements d’oeuvres pour orgue de Petr Eben.

Philip Crozier a présenté de nombreuses tournées de récital solo en Europe et en Amérique du Nord, incluant l’intégrale de Jehan Alain à Montréal en 1990 (et de nouveau en 2011, en treize concerts en Europe). En 1995, à la demande du compositeur Petr Eben, il crée en première canadienne l’Hommage à Henry Purcell.

Philip Crozier est organiste à l’Êglise St. George’s Anglican, Montréal et Directeur de Musique à l’Église Westmount Park United. Il est aussi l’accompagnateur des Chanteurs Stewart Hall, le Choeur de l’Université Concordia, l’Ensemble Opus 16 et est en demande fréquente comme accompagnateur de divers groupes choraux et instrumentaux.
